The Amber Sword Volume 2 Chapter 145
TL: Hey guys.
Edit: Stuff has been cleared up to have a cleaner page.
TL: Before I forget, I found a pretty interesting thing on desktop a few days ago. I’m using windows 10, and there’s this Magnifier Tool (you can call up by pressing “windows button and + button” at the same time). Press “CTRL ALT I” and you invert all colors. So if you’re having problems with reading on a white background, try doing that.
Chapter 145 – Warm words of Hope (7)
“Is the little girl your daughter?” Brendel said to the middle-aged man.
“She is indeed Brynjar’s daughter, my lord, but I’ll be taking care of her. Her mother is my adopted daughter.” It was the Elder who replied: “He has volunteered to be your guide because he’s grateful that you brought her back.”
(TL: I searched for a while, but I’m not finding any medieval equivalent for “in-laws”. That term seems to be relatively new. So instead of Bro.-in-law X, it’s just Brother X. I’ll assume that a father/mother calls his son-in-law by name without any addressing term.)
He took a moment to stroke Sifrid’s head.
“I would gladly guide you through the Dark Forest myself but I hope my lord understands I have to lead the village, even though I’m more familiar with it…..”
The mercenaries were silent the entire time. The rumors about the Dark Forest were more several times worse than the bedtime stories used to frighten the children in Aouine to sleep.
“What of her mother?” Amandina asked with furrowed brows.
The Elder sighed and his eyes appeared distant as he recalled old memories: “Sifrid’s mother shares half the blood of an Elf and was the loveliest girl in our village. She was also the happiest girl when she married Brynjar, but regrettably, she died to protect the other villagers during the previous ‘Hunt’……”
Brendel’s throat went dry. Memories of the crucified men and women came flooding back to him once more.
A Hunt was something that the nobles did to subjugate the fearsome barbarians. This practice was supposedly eliminated during the first Holy War as they stopped invading civilized kingdoms by then. Graudin’s supposed Hunt against the Senia’s citizens was nothing more to fulfill his perverse bloodlust.
[That fucking bastard must have deepened the feud between the locals and the Senia through some ridiculous reasoning……]
“…… I see.” Brendel chose to move forward: “Let’s move on to the next topic. I won’t object to your choice since you have already decided. I don’t believe going into the forest is a simple matter, so how much time do you need?”
His eyes went briefly to Brynjar before it went to the little girl. It should be fine to at least preserve his life with three Gold-ranked fighters in his group but he was troubled about the villagers.
“We will be ready in a few days, but my lord, I wish to warn you about the Dark Forest. It will become dangerous when autumn sets in fully. It is especially so just before winter, because the starving beasts in it will become extremely aggressive. And the powerful monsters—”
“That is fine,” Brendel interrupted him. “We only wish to cross the forest and we can handle anything that comes along our way.”
The Elder looked surprised; his mouth opened and shut a few times but no words came out.
He did not know Brendel was looking for the druids. They had been gone for nearly four centuries and had no ties with the outside world.
The youth was familiar with their territorial ways, and once he entered the forest, he was certain he was able to bait their ‘Beasts’ out. With his experience, he would be able to discern the druids’ locations if they ran back to their hideouts.
[The only problem I have is convincing the druids to find the legendary Lost Santuary, Vahalla, for me. These hidden race is neutral and holds no interest in humans’ affairs. The alliance between the druids and humans have been broken even before they chose to hide themselves. A Senia with me should help…… But there’s also the issue of my enemies are piling up before me. I probably need to find quicker solutions because I’m running out of time.]
He could only take one step at a time. The druids were slightly different from the Silver Elves. In a way, they were slightly better in comparison to the Silver Elves because they did not sever their ties to the outside world. The druids having a good relationship with the Senia was proof that he could strike up a relationship with them.
The Elder did not suspect Brendel’s motives. If they wanted to destroy the village they could have done so easily. One could only imagine how powerful they were when they took back Sifrid without any injuries with the amount of people they had.
But he was fearful of the aftermath. His experience told him that Baron Graudin would never let this feud go, and his wrath will reach this village very quickly.
[This village is unable to defend against Graudin. I originally wanted this young man and his mercenaries to stay here until this winter but he has flatly refused me….. They are not interested in our lives and only want a trade between us.]
The Elder had measured this in his heart. He felt that he had no excuses or rights to refuse Brendel. He could only sign deeply inside in his heart.
“I understand, my lord.” The old man bowed and said. “We will make arrangements for you as soon as possible.”
Brendel merely nodded.
When the Senia left he felt he could finally relax. He understood the worries of the Elder, but there was not enough time for him to stay the entire winter. And even if he did it might not be of use—
[Even if I march right up to Graudin’s face and tell him I did it, that crazy bastard would just vent his anger on them regardless.]
“Brendel, can we help them out?” Romaine tugged at his sleeves.
“I can lead them into the forest, but there’s no way for us to provide enough food to last them through winter. The only place we can purchase additional food is within Graudin’s territory, but do you think they would sell to us?” The youth spoke slowly.
Romaine’s eyes flickered sadly.
“I’ll stay behind.” Scarlett walked up to him and placed her lance over her shoulders, staring at Brendel with her amber eyes.
“Let me check your forehead.” He said after a short moment.
He got up with a heavy heart and pushed away the hair which was covering her forehead. A black flower-like pattern had spread across it. He had heard reports about how she had nightmares every night to the point she could not breathe but she had not made any complaints about it.
“You can’t stay behind.” He sighed. “The truth is, I don’t want you to leave too far away from me. Staying here for even one month is too dangerous for you or for these villagers. You know what I mean.”
She gritted her teeth and acknowledged his reply with a soft assent. His words plunged into her heart like daggers as she realized he was right. Once she became fully corrupted, these villagers’ fates will most likely be sealed if she stayed behind.
Amandina stood quietly at one corner without saying anything. She was not fond of the Senia villagers, but she clenched her fist at her inability to protect them.
Brendel tidied his shirt and looked at all of them: “I’m going out for a walk—”
Everyone looked surprised. Their lord was not someone who took random trips. The Nightsong Tiger and Scarlett walked up to him, but his hands were raised up: “The two of you stay behind. I’m taking a walk to clear my mind. The rest of you should take a good rest and prepare for our journey ahead.”
============= Sifrid’s POV =============
There was a tradition amongst the Senia; they believed that the dead will stay amongst the living for some time and bless them for their journeys ahead of them. Thus they built a Longhouse specifically for them and held the most important meetings in it.
This was to allow the souls of the dead to accompany the living to tide over the village’s most perilous junctures.
Now, there was an altercation that broke out in this holy grounds.
“I refuse!” The youth who stopped Brynjar yelled, his spittle flying across the table. “Goddess Nia will never hope to see this happen. It’s a miracle that Sifrid got rescued but we’re going to send her back?! Fuck your cowardly suggestions!”
“If we don’t send her back, every single head of the villagers heads will roll,” A thin man spoke in a low menacing voice: “None of us here want this to happen to Sifrid but we have no choice. Don’t you think we have seen enough deaths? Sifrid’s mother died resisting them for the sake of our lives. This is a sacred oath to let us survive the odds!”
He glared at the young man: “I’ll gladly offer my worthless life if the village requires me to sacrifice it. What we need now is our rational thoughts and not reckless emotions. We survived till this day because of that— Brynjar, Sifrid’s your daughter, tell us of your opinions.”
He turned to the middle-aged man. The latter was folding his arms and said nothing.
“Is there no other choice?” The young man said through clenched teeth: “Are we supposed to hand our own to the enemies just like that?”
“Perhaps we can enter the forest?” Someone said.
“We have no food for the harsh winter.” The Elder shook his head. They had not collected the food from their farms, and hiding the forest now would only mean they would starve and freeze to their deaths.
“Are we supposed to just send her to her death?”
“Your words aren’t right. The baron said he was taking her as a foster daughter right? Didn’t he say that if we bring her over there would be no need for us to hide in the forest and we can become real citizens…..”
A small voice in the crowd pierced through the room.
Everyone fell into complete silence. That was a lie which could not even deceive a child. A local lord will never look to the Senia citizens kindly, even if Sifrid had Elven blood in her. The nobles in Graudin’s land were twisted and immoral.
“Have you no shame? I cannot believe you are even capable of uttering these pathetic words. Why don’t you offer yourself and beg the Baron to fuck your arse?” The young man spat at the man who spoke earlier, the latter flushing red with shame.
“Elder, perhaps we should take up our weapons and fight these bastards off?” Another man said angrily.
The quarrels in the Longhouse became louder and louder and spilled out into the streets. Brendel was listening quietly on a boulder while he looked at the little girl squatting beside him. She was looking at the ants crawling on the ground peacefully, as though she did not hear the quarrels in the Longhouse……
“Sifrid,” The youth finally said: “You understand what our language, don’t you?”
She raised her head up with a surprised look.
“I’m….. Sorry.” She spoke in Brendel’s native tongue with difficulty.
“That’s fine,” Brendel shook his head. “I know that you needed to protect yourself during that time. It seems like you’re a smart little girl. You can call me Brother Brendel—”
The little girl’s smile was endearing. She paused for a moment.
“Brother….. Brendel, can I, take you to the forest, instead of my father? I too, know the forest. My mother, taught me.”
Brendel felt his heart melting, but he shook his head at the end.
“(Sifrid, even if you bring us to the forest and you are not in this village, that baron will still be here?)” This time the youth spoke in the Elven language.
Sifrid was taken aback for a moment and her face quickly fell.
“I’m sorry.” Brendel whispered.
The little girl bit her lips.
Suddenly, he heard crashes within the Longhouse with intensified yells.

Maybe he was just a huge nerd and learnt a fictional language.
May 10, 2017 @ 5:03 pm
Add my vote on this one.
I saw many friends learning elven language from d&d in real life, why couldnt they do it in the novel too XD
and yes, I was too lazy to join them XD so I never learned it myself XD
May 10, 2017 @ 11:00 pm
+ my vote.
May 11, 2017 @ 12:46 am
ill support this
May 10, 2017 @ 4:55 pm
Option 4: it doesn’t need to be explained.
May 10, 2017 @ 4:55 pm
He played the game for quite a few years (I don’t really recall the number, it was something between 10 and 30 xD) so it is possible that he learned the language in the game if he stayed with the elves or at least one elf for a certain amount of time as you learn a language faster by talking to people than simply learning it at a language school. Just think of all those fantasy languages we have such as klingon and so and that were learned by fans as well ^^ So it definitly is possible that he learned it.
May 10, 2017 @ 5:45 pm
Over 100 years if I recall correctly since VR time and real world time is not 1:1
May 10, 2017 @ 11:59 pm
Yeah, i also agree with you. Brendel is learning the language on those 100 years vr game haha. He is so dedicated to the game and geeky about it. That make him mastering all the tidbits of the game. I believe languages are ones of them.
May 10, 2017 @ 5:00 pm
maybe he’s just a nerd that learnt elven from a game…. wouldnt be a first
May 10, 2017 @ 5:04 pm
Option 5: He was a such a gaming/fantasy nut that he learned Elvish in the previous timeline, probably because he thought it was cool and it tied into a lot of quests.
May 10, 2017 @ 5:06 pm
Seriously? This surprises you? Nerds learn Klingon and D’ni in the real world, but you question someone learning elvish from this badass of a game? Both of those languages source material is strictly inferior to such a game if it was given reality. Obviously he learned elvish to be able to get secret info while playing the game.
May 10, 2017 @ 5:08 pm
Regarding the elven language thing there are also other possibilities like: He learned the elven language etc. back in the game and it followed him, or: The spiritual link between him and his cards allow the sharing of language/understanding, since he does have several elven cards?
May 10, 2017 @ 5:09 pm
there are people that speak Tolkiens Elven language and brendel was a nerd in this game that studied it´s law. it´s not that weird that he learned elven language like trekkies learn Klingon~
May 10, 2017 @ 5:10 pm
Well, there’s klingon language class right? Maybe there’s one for that game too.
May 10, 2017 @ 5:12 pm
ehm isnt it actually allready explained? i mean didnt he plaay this game for around 12 years with the time in-game beeing around 8 times faster… so think about it i mean its already said that his char was like 100+ years old which also means hes played for a shit ton of time in VR thats similar to reallife… so why wouldn’t he catch up with the language if he uses it so many times in quests etc……. -_-
May 10, 2017 @ 5:13 pm
First route is what “So What If It Is An RPG World!” did, which makes easier sense. The second option is basically auto-translate like “Log Horizon”. The last option is more like “Doctor Who”.
In all honestly, it’s probably nothing new like in our current modern culture. There are people who take the time to learn the made-up elf language, that star trek language, and other gibberish languages. I won’t be surprise if Brendel falls into the same category as this, which is option 1.
Thanks for the chapter.
May 10, 2017 @ 5:17 pm
Brendel could have properly learned the language in the game.
May 10, 2017 @ 5:18 pm
Well if elves are all that, and brendal did manage to learn elven swordsmanship, it would probably have been bad if he couldn’t understand what people were teaching him, so he could of learned it that way, or elven language is just some other real world language
Correct me if i’m wrog don’t remember what types of swordsmanship he knew
May 10, 2017 @ 5:19 pm
Echoing Chuu, it’s not like people don’t know fictional languages – Quenya, Klingon, etc. It’s really not such a big deal for a dedicated gamer to be so steeped into game lore that he even learns fictional languages created for the game.
May 10, 2017 @ 5:21 pm
It’s not like he can’t learn it. Didn’t he experience like 50 years (hopefully my memory doesn’t betrayed me) in the game? That’s pretty long and wouldn’t be weird for a hardcore gamer who seems to properly read the lore to pick up a few language.
May 10, 2017 @ 5:24 pm
Hmmm I don’t wanna bs but if they gained acces to the VR we readers mostly visionize that means they have public acces to a super computer that may had invented the language and due to how hard core of a gamer Brendel is he might had studied it or it is easy to learn in RL due to some similar wordings I guess~….
May 10, 2017 @ 5:25 pm
There’s no reason to turn the language into French. First of all it makes no sense because Eurpoean countries don’t exist in the world so why would their languages be present. Second, from what I can tell Sophie played the game for over a decade. Why wouldn’t he be able to learn one of the languages? Just a single player has to learn a language and then they can put it on the internet. Plus isn’t there more than one type of elf? Not all of them are hiding.
May 10, 2017 @ 5:35 pm
Besides he learned dozens of styles of swordsmanship and it’s fine but a language is too much? Even if you want to say that made up languages are shallow compared to real ones it’s irrelevant. The shallow understanding, of the now real language, would still be enough for him to communicate. All in all I see it as a completely pointless change.
May 10, 2017 @ 5:26 pm
Thanks!
Maybe Brendel just learned it in the game? I mean, don’t several of the people involved in the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy become fluent in the Elven language?
It someone is a big enough nerd, they could easily learn a fiction language so long as there is enough resources and it is developed enough. And he has already been estabilished as a big nerd when it comes to the game that this world is based on.
Maybe he just liked the lore and learned the language. Isn’t this reasonable enough, Wolfie?
May 10, 2017 @ 5:37 pm
Thanks for the chapter 😉
May 10, 2017 @ 5:43 pm
Yeah, I agree with most of the people here and I think Brendel just learned Elvish to gain an advantage while he was playing the original VR game. Even if we were to look at modern MMOs, I could totally see WOW raid groups learning fictional languages if it gave them an edge in the game.
May 10, 2017 @ 6:34 pm
Wouldn’t really even need to be an edge. Just look at all the people that speak Klingon.
May 10, 2017 @ 6:56 pm
Agreed, as it was some players used to learn how to read and respond to the the horde in wow for example kek was horde for lol
May 10, 2017 @ 6:33 pm
He spent decades in that world, learning the language of a race as powerful as the Elves was likely a very good idea that he had plenty of time to realize. I find it more surprising that he didn’t use it earlier. Is he trying to hide it from his subordinates for some reason?
May 10, 2017 @ 6:56 pm
It’s not that I didn’t care so I chose option 4. It’s that the other options were bad so I chose number 4 as “other”.
May 10, 2017 @ 6:58 pm
The other option hardcore fan
May 10, 2017 @ 7:24 pm
I am willing to bet that the reason he can understand elfish is a mix of his inner game system and prior knowledge. He had the scholar profession in the past life I am willing to bet that it translated to here. Each language to him is a skill so if he hears it and can respond enough he would get the skill under the scholar profession and perhaps even get a slight bonus to that profession for learning elfish. His prior knowledge helps but using it and the game system together enables him to gain that access.
May 10, 2017 @ 7:25 pm
The game is able to generate history, even when it can’t generate a language it should still be able to generate a lqnguage evolution when you feed it a few (fictional) languages. You are really underestimating Computers
May 10, 2017 @ 7:29 pm
heck could the elven language be the “Lord of the Rings” elf language used in the game and learned from playing in the game?
May 10, 2017 @ 7:50 pm
The world was a VR game originally, as I understand it, which means the language was created artificially. Plus he could easily learn it if he interacted with the Elves.
I would also argue for him retaining knowledge his character had in-game, were it not for the fact that he got reset into an NPC.
May 10, 2017 @ 8:46 pm
You forgot plot armor. Don’t use logic when plot armor exists. It’ll never work. You’re only driving yourself mad.
May 10, 2017 @ 8:46 pm
I was thinking Brendel just learned the language himself the hard way while playing the game.
May 10, 2017 @ 8:53 pm
Basically.. he was a gamer-nerd. So he probably learnt it for Comicon or the sort. Honestly, as a planeswalker you should at least be able to converse in multiple languages , right? Anyways, all HAIL VR MAGIC!
May 10, 2017 @ 9:30 pm
Thanks for the chapter :3
May 10, 2017 @ 10:39 pm
I say he just spent some experience points into the elven language
May 10, 2017 @ 10:52 pm
Also possible that planewalker system make it so since he already have an elf card.
May 10, 2017 @ 11:28 pm
I think your question about the language is about the setting in the original VR. If so then with the advanced technology to realize the VR game of that quality making a language for each region and race as appropriate makes sense. But I don’t think it matters if all languages in the game where different languages from Earth(english speaking people start in place A, chinese speaking people start in place B if you want to understand people in other places you need to learn the appropriate real language), or languages generated just for the game and that the magic of VRtranslate connects everybody(people speak their region’s language according to game setting and skill levels regardless of real language), or even making everyone learn new languages to play(because in the future everyone is a genius, highly unreasonable). Because without the author’s explanation all of these and more possibilities could explain the game setting, and for each possible setting it could be explained how Brendel/Sophie knows the language.
Unless I’m talking about something completely different.
May 10, 2017 @ 11:31 pm
Brendel played the game for a long time so he probably learned it on his own during the years of VR. He just has to remember it and does not need to re-learn it.
May 10, 2017 @ 11:40 pm
“TL: Before I forget, I found a pretty interesting thing on desktop a few days ago. I’m using windows 10” really really should upgrade to windows 7 or ubuntu

Maybe the real Brendel has Elven ancestry? Who knows…
May 11, 2017 @ 12:00 am
Wolfie edit: Yup, I just went to that section. I’m going to have to put your comment on hold until we reach that chapter. You’re right. From what I know about the rumors from chinese discussions, there’s divine interference as to why he TPed to this alternate world. I haven’t seen the text for myself and there were some rumors that were debunked which is why I’m against stating it outright. Now that you point this out, it most likely means there’s really a chance where the divine interference took part in the development of the TAS game.
Wolfie please read this..
Slight spoiler about langagues, well not really a spoiler just info on langagues in a few hundred chapters.
In a few arcs from now, Brendel will meet some drawven things.
The author writes that Brendel can’t read the language because the vr usual translated it for him. So he was too lazy to learn it, but He can make out some symbols. I guess because he randomly picked up on some things from interacting with drawven often enough.
Another important piece of info to consider.
He gets a sword that arc. The devolpers wrote something really small in English on the sword when sophie played the game. A Easter egg sort of thing.
It’s still written there in English, which shocks him a little because it’s not a game anymore. Some companions of his wonder how he can read the language since it should have been a super ancient langagues. Before the chaos dragon war, Like Martha creating the world ancient langague.
May 11, 2017 @ 6:08 am
Maybe the author will explain it later on? Why do you need to make something up?
May 11, 2017 @ 7:24 am
Because I’m roughly on the same speed as the readers? I don’t know stuff that’s happening in advance and I think it’s fun for everyone to make a guess as to what’s happening. It’s like schrodinger’s cat. As long as the box isn’t opened yet, all theories are fair game, and the readers get to have fun deciding how the story goes. Since the raws state outright (pointed by a reader to me), the fun is over and I’m releasing that information to everyone.
When we reach there and we’re wrong I can still go back and change the chapters, which is what I’m doing now from chapter 1.
May 11, 2017 @ 11:33 am
There’s a big difference between fans talking about their theories and the translator writing his favorite theory into the story.
If you write your theory of why Brendel knows elvish into the story then as far as the other readers are concerned, that’s the truth.
May 11, 2017 @ 12:43 pm
Nope, you’re wrong.
I polled before and readers choose pretty much what they want to have. For example, 75% of the people wanted the name Sophie to stick around even though I don’t want it to. The majority chose “it doesn’t matter” for this poll, and in fact the runner-up vote isn’t my choice either.
I’m acquiescing to the readers because it’s their truth they arrived at and I won’t take it away from them.
May 11, 2017 @ 1:07 pm
Names falls under “translation” anyway. Chinese names are weird so sometimes they get translated literally and sometimes not. If you want to make the names most western and easier to remember then fine.
However, what you are doing here is adding fan fiction to the story. There is a lot of fan fiction around for many stories. And it’s cool and lots of people have fun with it. However, everything knows what these things are fan fiction. I have no idea what “fake” information you are adding into the story and it makes me a little uncomfortable.
And you are talking about doing it for something that might have been intentionally left unanswered, so the author can fill us in on a later date. I don’t think it’s a good idea to add what you think is the most likely explanation since it all likelihood the author will have a different one.
May 11, 2017 @ 1:37 pm
Look, I don’t want to be too negative here. I really Amber Sword and your liberal translation of it might be a big part of why.
However, I think you are getting presumptuous when you say that the readers of your translation of the Amber Sword should have a say in the story.
May 11, 2017 @ 2:29 pm
I’m already editing the text on a level that goes beyond mere translation to fix plot holes and inconsistencies made by the author.
Brendel being able to speak Elven all of a sudden for example, remains material that’s outside the content of the story, but it’s just as punishing as his Sophie/Su Fei name debacle. His name comes out as a bomb 300-400 chapters, which I found by chance. “Oh your name sounds like a girl!” Says the people around him — For what reason? Kirrlutz = English? Or because some unknown reason X? Plot hole or bad writing?
The author is intentionally vague all the time because he doesn’t need to keep a hard check on the facts. Guess why I have to create a character sheet to make life easier on myself.
You can ultimately call it fanfiction if you want to, because it’s true that I fill in stuff to fix errors. My edits are mostly there to fix consistency, plot holes, adhere to a ‘medieval’ dialogue read, with zero changes to the overall plot. I don’t read ahead because I believe it lessens the chance that I meddle with the overall plot as well.
As long as the author has a good plausible explanation in the future, I’ll be sure to re-edit the chapters again with explanations. Until then…
May 11, 2017 @ 8:26 am
Back again with more questions. Well one question and then a thought.
On Scarlett’s name, why did you choose to use two t’s at the end of her name instead of one? Was there a reason or just personal preference? I only ask as she is one of my favorite characters (though I do adore people like Romaine too).
——–
On language, especially something like the elven language, I would personally first believe it to be a new language made up for the game. Brendel/Sophie has already shown his deep knowledge and lore of the game world, even knowing many words from ancient languages and their meaning. Given that and him being such a veteran of the game (spanning a decade was it in our world, being over 80 years in the game), it is most likely he would have taken the time to learn a new language. In fact I would think most veteran players would have taken the time to learn the ancient languages of the elves and the like so that they could complete many hidden quests that they would otherwise not be able to. With his mindset in wanting to complete everything so thoroughly, he would have definitely taken the time to learn another language.
If you didn’t know, the author of the Lord of the Rings was actually a language professor and the languages that he came up with (elven and the others) are actually completely well thought out so that they follow how a language would flow and has it’s own rules that make sense. Take a look at his wiki page (especially the part on language construction) to know more. This small tangent is just to go that possibly the fictional creators of the amber world game possibly had this type of knowledge when they created the game and constructed new languages for the world that they made up (whether or not the actual author has that ability).
But again, as others have mentioned (and now I’m repeating myself), I believe he just learned it on his own (in attempt to complete more quests and his love of the Amber World game/lore). At least until the author says otherwise.
Placing the language in italics with brackets around it works fine for now for showing it’s another language being spoken.
——————–
Another thing (just thought of it while typing the above), Novel Updates and the Wikia show that there are 6 volumes with 1527 chapters in total spanning over the 6 volumes.
Is it more correct to think of it as “story arcs” instead of “volumes” as included with the official art work, there are 13 published books for “Heroes of Amber”? This, honestly, confuses me greatly.
——————–
With 1527 chapters and you having covered 201 chapters (56 in book 1 and 145 of book 2 so far), you are only 13% of the way thru translating it all. If at the pace of 1 chapter a day, that will take you 3.6 years or so to completely translate it all (woo that’s a long time. Even cutting it in half, translating 2 chapters a day without rest, that’s still 1.8, so about 2 years.
Obviously one does not want to rush a fan translator as no one likes to be rushed. Just that given how much I enjoy the series and my great lack of being able to speak any of the Chinese dialects, much less read it (even though I’m half Chinese myself), I would feel very sad if you burned out and gave up translating the entire series like so many other fan translators that I see undertake such large projects.
So I was wondering about your thoughts on that (though I have no idea what I’m expecting as a response as it’s a pretty vague thing to ask).

Because Scarlett Johansson.
You guys are misunderstanding something. In the first place I’m saying this:
VR languages programmed by humans/computers cannot be as deep as a world’s languages that evolved for thousands of years.
And even if the VR languages does somehow become the equivalent of the alternate world’s languages, then the odds, *vastly* to the power of n, will goes beyond plausibility. You cannot equate a game to somehow copy another world’s language because it evolves throughout the ages.
Right now I’m seeing this from you guys:
How does Brendel know languages from another world? Because he learned from VR’s languages. Why do the VR languages mirror the alternate’s world languages perfectly? Because…… the world accepts VR languages?
Do you see why I’m so against VR having this point? It’s circular logic. People are missing the point as to why VR can have the same exact language as the alternate world. Even having the same events happening is already stretching it.
Brendel doesn’t even question that in his mind (or it’s really the author taking his omniscience and applying it to him), even after 200 chapters. While I can kind of chalk his Kirrlutz’s linguist speak as the old Brendel’s knowledge, why the heck did he suddenly know how to speak Elven?
But the problems don’t end there. Look at their names. Freya, Frank, Erik. All these names are names that have history behind them. If they want to use “new” languages as real alternate languages, they need to cut them out entirely. Simply put, the author borrowed these names to make it medieval-like.
Plot holes, people. So many plot holes. I’m trying to fill it up the best I can as I go along. It would be great if the author is so much of a genius that I don’t need to fix logic errors, but this is not the first time it happened.
As for the rate of translation, it’s tied down to money and time at the end. Right now there’s just not enough budget here to speed things up (I tried getting patreon, but nope, not enough readership). I have my own art career to think of, so this is going to remain a hobby for the next 15 years. Most realistically I’ll draw some fanart and a few manga chapters for fun, finish up the translation and that would be it.

Money is important. Myself, I’m a bit short as last week, my car had some major problems and the cost to fix it would be $1500-2000. Making one think that it is almost time to look for a new car…. Either way, it’ll need to be fixed as no one wants to buy a non-functioning car.
I’m, again, not demanding quicker translations or the like as a fan translation is not a job where you are required to do it with deadlines and the like. Was just curious since it is such a long project. Especially for a single person (I believe?) to be working on it. It’s not like we can expect the translation rate that Skythewood did with the Overlord novels (one of my absolute favorite series) in which they translated each novel in about 1 to 1.5 months each, which is completely insane (and veeeery much appreciated). Though I believe they had 3 translators working on it and 2 editors, which probably helps more than I would know. Ah, now I wish you had a group to work on the series, obviously with someone such as yourself as the lead so that the translations and terms are consistent, so that chapters churn out faster, but that’s of course just wishful thinking….
Anywho, I appreciate all the hard work you put into the series and hope you last until the end, no mater how long it takes.

He learned horse riding by just asking for the basics.
He could have learn from the sisters or the silver elves at any moment.
Also he is an scholar! He could have read about it.
This poll is stupid.

Im going with option six as in does it matter? No? okay then next subject like Brendel isn’t really just gonna leave the little girl to that deranged bastard is he? Come on plot miracle work your magic…. Please? I said please so… Yeah….

How about the alternate reality he is in now already existed and the VR game was based off of it with the VR advancing faster as a type of forecasting. So all the languages existed in full whether or not they were fully augmented into the VR and Brendel learned them during his gaming time. This way there is fully developed unique languages everywhere they should be unrelated to any Earth languages without ‘VR solves it’ as the solution. This may be harder to accept though depending on biases.
